This past Saturday, the Michigan State Spartans football team absolutely dismantled the Akron Zips. The Spartans earned a captivating 52 – 0 victory, despite some underwhelming Quarter Back play. However, Michigan State’s top tier Running Backs, Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard, ran rampant on the Akron defense from start to finish. Combined, the pair of star ball carriers ran for nearly 200 yards, while adding 5 rushing touchdowns to the team’s total. The crazy part is, the stellar duo only needed 32 carries to reach those phenomenal numbers. Let’s take a more in-depth look at the top MSU Running Backs, from Saturday’s game.

Starting RB: #8 Jalen Berger

By far the best player on the field Saturday, Jalen Berger ran 17 times for a total of 107 yards and 3 touchdowns. These statistics show that Berger averaged an incredible 6.3 yards per carry, while also vastly leading the Spartans team in total rushes. After off-season speculation, the transfer from Wisconsin has done a great job of showing the Michigan State fans that he is worthy of being the starting Running Back. Not many college Running Backs, especially ones outside of the SEC, would be able to average over 6 yards per carry in a game.

After some off the field issues ruined Berger’s time in Wisconsin, he has seemingly had no drama surrounding him in East Lansing. Not many people believed that bringing Berger in, via the transfer portal, was a move that would equate to immediate success for the Spartans. Even though the majority of fans had negative impressions about Berger’s personal choices at Wisconsin, he appears to have turned over a new leaf during his short stint at Michigan State. Dominating in games, and staying out of unnecessary drama, is the simple equation for Berger to continue being the head of the snake in MSU’s dangerous ground attack.

Complementary RB: #3 Jarek Broussard

Against Akron on Saturday, 2nd string RB Jarek Broussard ran for over 80 yards and found the end zone twice. These numbers may appear less than impressive on the surface, but Broussard only accumulated 15 rushing attempts on the day. These stats Broussard produced against the Zips would be better than some of the starting RBs in college football, on most days, let alone a backup. Broussard may have had a lower yards per carry total than starter Jalen Berger, but his 5.4ypc is still extremely impressive. There is no question that many teams would love to have Broussard as their starting RB, but the Spartans have the luxury of letting him come into the game as a complement to Berger.

The former Colorado Buffalo showcased his elite playmaking ability prior to joining the Michigan State team. During his time at Colorado, Broussard achieved the honor of being named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. Broussard knew that he may not get the starting RB role at Michigan State. However, he has always been able to make the most of his opportunities, and transferring to MSU allowed him to play for a playoff contender. Overall, Broussard coming off the bench gives the Spartans, arguably, the most dangerous ground attack in college football, when he is paired with starter Jalen Berger.
